RAD vs. RADD
Rapid Application Development (RAD) is a decades-old idea: use visual tools, reusable components, and iterative prototyping to build software faster than traditional hand-coded development. No-code and low-code platforms, and more recently AI-assisted app builders, are the current generation of RAD tools. They have genuinely delivered on the promise — a mobile workflow app that once took months to code can now be assembled in days.

Where RAD stops
RAD tools shorten the time it takes to build an app. They do nothing about what happens after the app is built. A mobile workflow app built in a no-code or low-code environment still has to pass through important enterprise security review, identity and access integration, data governance checks, device management provisioning, and audit trail standards before it can run on a ruggedized handheld in a regulated retail warehouse. In most large retail IT environments, that review process takes months, independent of how quickly the app itself was built.
This is why a citizen developer can build a working app in an afternoon and still watch it sit unreviewed for months. The bottleneck did not go away. It moved downstream, from development to deployment — and RAD tools have no answer for it, because it isn’t a development problem.
Where RADD picks up
RADD treats deployment as an important part of the same problem, not a separate IT workstream to be negotiated after the fact. The mechanism is architectural: instead of reviewing and approving each app individually, RADD embeds the entire app development and deployment environment inside the retailer’s existing IT security perimeter — pre-approved for authentication, data handling, integration patterns, device management, and audit standards. Apps built inside that environment inherit the controls automatically, rather than each one starting its security review from zero.
Why this distinction matters for retailers and supply chain organizations
Any vendor can claim to make app development faster — that claim is now table stakes across the low-code and no-code market. The question worth asking a vendor is different: how does an app built on your platform actually get onto a frontline worker’s device inside your existing security model, and how long does that step take?
If the answer only addresses building the app, it’s a RAD answer. If the answer addresses how the app inherits your organization’s security and governance controls automatically at deployment, it’s a RADD answer — and it’s the one that actually determines your Time to Frontline.
The practical difference
RAD compresses weeks of coding into days. RADD compresses months of deployment review into days. For a retailer trying to shorten its Time to Frontline, the second gap is almost always larger than the first.
